With the continuing trends toward customization and social media what’s the smartest thing Google could do? Start up it’s own social network? Buy a hot new company like Twitter? Have people create a video status update?
While that last one sounds kind of cool, there’s a reason the Google folks hire super smart people. Highly intelligent marketers realize that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So rather than chasing pre-existing models, they’ve chosen to stick to their core competency -search expertise.
Google Social Search is the newest product from the Google Labs. Basically, it allows you to find search results tied to your local network in addition to the “one size fits all” menu of results that you normally receive. So if you have a friend named Alex Rodriguez, you may actually be able to type his name in to Google now and find appropriate results. And if you’re a business with a name like “Prime Meats”, you can also create mailing lists and get in customers contact lists (to make sure you show up in their search results).
It’s a brilliant little idea and you can find out more about it here.
