I had known our Chairman and Co-Founder DJ Edgerton for a number of years before I joined Zemoga. So I knew that working at Zemoga wasn’t going to be an ordinary employment experience. When I agreed to become a part of the Z-team, DJ suggested that I join him and Dan Licht on their next trip to Bogota, so that I could get up to speed as quickly as possible. What DJ didn’t know was that Alejandro Gomez and DJ’s wife Carolyn had a special surprise party planned for his 40th birthday party. Dan and I were both sworn to secrecy and told that we had to get DJ back to our hotel at a specific time on Friday night.
The week before had been intense, with multiple briefings from the Z-team, long days and longer nights exploring the (ahem) “culture” of Bogota. So even though I was armed with inside knowledge of the evening plans, my travel weary brain wasn’t prepared for … well, what you see in the photo above.
Yes, that is a bus full of forty people all sporting DJ Edgerton masks. Apparently it’s the first rule of Colombian comedy, if one DJ face is funny then multiple DJ faces are even funnier!
We went on to enjoy a memorable night that included hat stacking, my first exposure to Andrés Carne de Res, and my first experiences with aguardiente. But that image of the multiple DJ faces still makes me laugh to this day. I wonder if Pardo still has his mask?
