Since we’re a few days away from the Oscars, we thought we’d ask Lina Rey (@linamrm) to share a little knowledge on some Colombian actors living and working in the US and Europe. Some you know. Some you’ll be surprised by.
Lately, is all about Sofía Vergara (Sofía Margarita) and her success with the show Modern Family. Her role in the series has been acclaimed and has brought her award nominations, like the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Sofia was born in Barranquilla and moved to Miami to pursue her modeling and acting career. One of the characteristics that make Sofia’s character so successful is her accent. She claims that is real and that after 20 years of living in the US her accent just gets stronger and stronger.
These days the talk is all about her, but bet you did not know of some other Colombian actors that are also very successful and get to appear in films and cool TV shows.
Here you have five of them:
John Leguizamo (Jonathan Alberto) was born in Bogota. His mother is Colombian and his dad is Puerto Rican. When he was four years old, they moved to the United States. His parents often struggled maintaining his Spanish and sometimes they even had to bribe him to force him to speak Spanish.
Besides having roles in important films and TV shows. Leguizamo is also known for his vocal talents; he voiced a pesky rat in Dr Dolittle and later, he voiced Sid in the film Iced Age. Leguizamo also does theater and he is going to Broadway in March 2011 with ‘Ghetto Klown’, a solo show about his life which he describes as “all the things I say to my therapist and my manager, but would NEVER want the general public to know”
Jack Guzman (Joaquin Alberto) was born in Barranquilla and moved to Miami when he was 5 years old. His first big role was in the TV Series Power Rangers Wild Force, where he played the black Ranger. After that, many other roles came in series like CSI Miami and The Drew Carey Show.
Lou Castel was born in Bogota and moved to Europe when he was young. His first big Role was in ‘Fists in the pocket’, an Italian movie from 1965. Later he starred in ‘Beware of a Holy Whore’ a film directed by Fassbinder, who was considered one of the most important representatives of the New German Cinema.
Paula Garcés was born in Medellin and moved to Harlem New York when she was a kid. She is mostly know for her role in the film “Clockstoppers” (2002).
