What were Christopher Columbus’s three ships? Can you name them? I couldn’t. My daughters and my wife were driving to a birthday party, and out of nowhere, Zoe, my eldest, asked the question. She remembered the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, but we were not so sure of the third ships’ name – we all knew it – but we all have these moments where something we KNOW we know, just doesn’t make it from the back of our storage facility to our mouth…

I handed my wife my iPhone and said “Ask my phone”. She found the Google app on my phone, and started typing away. “No, no”, I said, “TALK to it”. And sure enough, she held the phone to her face, and clearly said “What were the names of Columbus’ ships”. Less than 5 seconds later – we had it. Nina. My wife looked at me and mumbled “Star Trek” and started asking all kinds of crazy questions to see when she could stump the Google App on my phone. She couldn’t. The voice recognition was just that good, and the interface was amazingly simple. The combination of the accelerometer-triggered search that KNOWS when you hold the phone to your face, and gets Google ready for voice input, the amazing voice recognition algorithm and the power and accuracy of Google search work astonishingly well together, and deliver a truly delightful experience.
